Naturally curly hair requires a different kind of hair care routine compared to straight hair. It requires more work and is much more difficult to deal with. However, having naturally curly hair does have its perks. It’s very sexy and exquisite, for one. And, if taken care of properly, you can really play it out to your advantage. If you have naturally curly hair and you’re looking for a way to turn that thick, chunky bush into a lovely asset, check out our tips below on how to care for naturally curly hair.

  • Don’t comb your hair when it’s wet – with straight hair, hair experts would advise you not to brush your hair when it’s wet but to use a wide toothed comb instead. When you have naturally curly hair, though, brushing and even combing should be avoided. If you want to detangle your hair while it’s wet, use your fingers and run them gently through your hair instead. When drying wet hair, you should leave your locks alone and not touch it with a brush, a comb or even your hands unless you want to get frizzy hair to bother you all day.

  • Read the label – there are certain ingredients in hair care products that you should watch out for if you have naturally curly hair. These ingredients are often the culprits to blame for crunchy, uncooperative and difficult curls to manage. Read the labels before you buy any hair care product to use on naturally curly hair and make sure they’re alcohol-free.
  • Try the “No ‘Poo” craze – there’s been a hair trend going on, not only for naturally curly hair but for other hair types as well and this is called the No ‘Poo movement.  This means you get to wash your hair everyday but instead of using both shampoo and conditioner, you skip the ‘poo and just use conditioner solely instead. By doing this, you get soft, moisturized curls and you’re sure that your curly hair won’t get stripped of its natural oils and get crunchy.

  • Use products while your hair is damp – if you use any kind of styling or taming product on your hair, whether it’s a mousse, cream, gel or spray, apply it on to your hair while it’s damp (again, damp and not dripping wet) so that you hair has a better chance of absorbing the product for it to work its magic into your hair. Also, make sure that you use the right amount of product on your hair. Remember that naturally curly hair is also naturally thicker so you might need to use a bit more than what the instructions say unless the product is specially intended for use on curly hair.

  • Try to air dry as much as possible – curly hair is more prone to frizz compared to straight hair and if you want to avoid this, the best way to dry your hair is to let it air dry or to let it dry naturally. Avoid using a hair blower but if you must, make sure it’s on the lowest and coolest setting. Unless you want to look like the Lion King, never ever use your blow dryer hot.
