Braided updo hairstyles are often the choice of women for special events and occasions where they want to look glamorous and chic. These updos range from the easy ones to the more intricate ones that need a lot more time, patience, hair tools and hair products.

Here are 5 elegant braided updo hairstyles that you can try on your own, starting from the easiest one progressing on to the more difficult styles.

• The Braided Top Knot – This is a twist on the classic bun that everyone loves. It’s very quick and easy to do (you’ll be needing roughly around 5 minutes) and you’ll only need a few things like a hairbrush, elastic bands (preferable the same or nearest color as your hair), bobby pins and gel. Start off by putting your hair up in a high ponytail then braid your ponytail until you reach the end. Tie your braid with an elastic band, wrap it around to make a bun and secure with bobby pins. Smooth your hair with gel if needed and you’re good to go.

• The Crown Braided Bun – This is another twist on the classic bun that others also call the ‘wrap braided bun’. before putting your hair up in a bun just leave 2 sections, about 1 to 2 inches thick on each side, and braid these. Secure the braids with an elastic band, proceed with your regular bun and wrap around the braided sections around the bun and hold it secure with bobby pins. This can be done with a top bun, a low bun and even a side bun.

• The Milkmaid Braid – When you first see this hairstyle, you’ll think it’s a difficult one but it really isn’t. Milkmaid braids start off with two neatly braided pigtails. When braiding your pigtails, though, try to tug and go upwards as you braid instead of going straight down. Once your braided pigtails are done, cross each over to the opposite side and secure with bobby pins behind the ears.

• The Inverted Braided Bun – Now, this is a bit trickier and requires more patience. Start by flipping your hair upside down and proceed to braiding it using the French braid method. Once you’ve reached the top of your head, secure the braid and you should have a ponytail. Take this ponytail and turn it into a bun and your inverted braided bun is all set. You’ll make lots of mistakes at first since you can’t really see what you’re doing and all you really can do is just feel your way through the braid but with practice, you’ll surely get the hang of it soon.

Quick tip: for a bigger bun, try using a sock bun as the base. You can make the braids as tight or loose as you want, depending on how sleek or casual you want to look.
