If you’ve never tried a matte cream before, the texture may feel a bit strange, to say the least. It is neither a lipstick nor a gloss. It has a creamy, almost whipped and airy consistency, but it still feels ‘dry’ to the touch.
The Soft Matte Lip Creams come with a doe-foot wand to apply the product. I really wanted to love it, butapplication was quite patchy for me every time I’ve used it on bare lips. It took a lot more finessing and blending than I thought was reasonable to get fairly even coverage. For me, this may be best served over a lip liner or lipstick.
In addition to this, the lasting power is pretty poor, averaging at just 2 or 3 hours (if I’m lucky) and evaporating to leave weird patches of color on the lips. Note to the wise: exfoliate prior to using this or any other matte product because it does accentuate dry patches.
The lip cream has a noticeable, but pleasant sweet, vanilla scent and as the name would suggest, the finish is a creamy matte.
NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams can be found at Ulta or Target for $5.99.
Overall, I like the color and the concept of this matte cream. I know many people love these, but it just did not work out for me in the way that I would have hoped. I do think it could work well as a top coat for a lip pencil or lipstick, though.
I give NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Cream in Antwerp 2.5/5
