How To Wear Gingham Outfits | Aelida

Nostalgia for the 70s was unmistakably evident this season as models flaunt the runway in the top designers’ Spring/Summer Collections. One of the trends taking off this season is the small-checkered pattern, gingham, which would remind most of us of Dorothy skipping down the yellow brick road with the rest of the Wizard of Oz gang or of Raggedy Ann—styles we would definitely avoid.

Here are some style ideas to wearing your ginghams without looking like a picnic blanket or table cloth this spring.

The great thing about gingham is that it is already a feminine pattern by itself. You don’t have to go all out with bright colors. Instead, keep it simple. Steal the style of French bombshell Brigitte Bardot by throwing off a knee-length gingham skirt and a form-fitting plain shirt inserted underneath. Trust me, that’s already feminine as it is.

  1. When mixing, remember neutral

You can try gingham-on-gingham outfits but keep in mind that they should have a similar color or tone, preferably neutral (e.g., white, black). The same goes for gingham-and-printed.

Denim and gingham go back a long way. But if you’re not opting for the cowboy-in-overalls look then heed the advice of Lucky Shop’s Alison Syrett: think boxy silhouettes and layered outfits. Keep your ginghams modern and avoid the Dorothy clothes—unless that’s your Halloween costume, then go for it!

Because of its daintiness and breezy feel, gingham can be a great contrast to heavily textured fabrics such as leather and knits. For one thing, it gives that edgy but chic look on you. For another, you can layer up some more come winter.

Gingham as an undershirt in a layered outfit is the way to go. It’s peeking out of the solid color and breaking the sleekness and solidity of your ensemble. Even the Duchess of Cambridge approved of it!

And my personal favorite? A black-and-white gingham—a versatile color pair in a versatile pattern. The thing about a black-and-white gingham clothing is that you can wear it on any occasion and style it with anything—anything—and could still fit gorgeously in your attire. It’s a definite must-have!
